The Self-Advocacy Leadership Series (SALS)

MASS delivers trainings on a variety of topics throughout Massachusetts. We have ten training teams across the state, with three to four self-advocates and one coordinator per team.

Like the rest of our organization, MASS Trainings are rooted in the rule of “nothing about us without us”. Over 95% of our trainers have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

About The The Self-Advocacy Leadership Series (SALS)

Overview & Objectives:

  • To improve soft skills in the following areas: communication, listening, teamwork, self-awareness, problem solving and negotiation.

  • The Self-Advocacy Leadership Series (SALS) is an eight-class series that focuses on the fundamentals of leadership.

  • The SALS is designed for young adults with ID/DD between the ages 17-22, and is also available for older adult groups.

  • Seven of the 8 classes are 1 hour long. The 8th class is graduation where students and teachers are encouraged to invite family and other faculty members to celebrate the hard work of each student as they present a final speech and receive a certificate of completion.

  • Classes are taught by a self-advocate peer trainer.

  • At the completion of the program, students will be recognized at a virtual Graduation Ceremony. Family members are invited to the celebration. Students will receive a Certificate of Achievement from MASS.
