Self Advocate Peer Trainer

Massachusetts Advocates Standing Strong is a statewide self-advocacy organization that supports, nurtures, and promotes self-advocacy in youth and adults with developmental disabilities. Our mission is to empower self-advocates through education so we make choices that improve and enrich our lives.

 

Train and Present.

Self Advocate Peer Trainers present skills and information to groups of participants, assisting the participants in developing varied self-advocacy skills. 

In particular, we are looking for trainers to split their time between  our Self-Advocacy Leadership Series (SALS) training, wearemass.org/self-advocacy-leadership-series-sals and our Awareness and Action (A&A) training which focuses on recognizing, reporting and responding to abuse.


Compensation.

The position pays $15.50 to $18.00 an hour with reimbursement for mileage and expenses when training is not on Zoom. 

This is a Part-Time position 5-10 hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities

Some of the duties and responsibilities for Self Advocate Peer Trainers include…

  • Commit to and attend up to 10 training sessions per year, with the opportunity to do more trainings if the schedule allows.

  • Manage your own personal schedule in a manner that allows you to participate in all trainings you committed to attending.

  • The expectation of in-person work 70% of the time, and remote work 30% of the time.

  • Manage your own transportation if training is not taking place on Zoom. There is reimbursement for mileage and expenses.

  • Submit biweekly detailed project timesheets

  • Be ready to work at the training start-time and stay until the training end-time.

  • Stand or sit with other trainers in front of people in a classroom.

  • Support the team coordinator/mentor by:

  • Following assignments and guidance in a positive manner

  • Returning phone calls and emails, whichever is appropriate, within 24 hours

  • Informing the Training Team coordinator and Operations Coordinator, as soon as possible, when you cannot attend a training you have committed to

  • Work with other trainers in a supportive and cooperative manner.

  • Attend mandatory practice meetings, and other training team Zoom meetings.

  • Learn and practice the training curricula for all training you are presenting. 

  • Lead a training session by following a PowerPoint or Google slide presentation.

  • Encourage and support the participation of self-advocates attending the training.

  • Assist self-advocates attending the training (within the limits of training delivery). Ability to adjust teaching style to the audience.

  • Follow guidelines regarding confidentiality when necessary.

Qualifications

Experience in self-advocacy, community organizing, human rights, presenting and facilitating training, or comparable experience. 

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience facilitating a training or giving a presentation.

  • Comfort in facilitating groups, training activities, and online webinar presentations to participants and stakeholders.

  • Experience with Zoom and online conferencing platforms preferred. 

  • Experience in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Calendar) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) preferred.

  • A willingness to learn and grow with the position as new opportunities and funding becomes available.

  • Familiarity with organizing, networking and creating connections with other groups and allies.
