Jackie Lee Dulmaine

Learn about Jackie and why and how she advocates!

Kamisha: Why do you advocate?

Jackie: I advocate because I not only want to advocate for others, I want to advocate for myself.

Kamisha: Can you give us an example of a time when you advocated for yourself?

Jackie: I advocated for myself to my manager when I was stuck in a situation and I got upset because- because staff was not hearing me out, so I went ahead and the staff- the manager helped me advocate in a way that staff understood what I was trying to say.

Kamisha: How long have you been advocating for?

Jackie: I've been advocating for over fourteen years.

Kamisha: What got you started in self-advocacy?

Jackie: What got me start in self-advocacy was that I connected with Sue Moriarty and she got me into self-advocacy. And not only that, she helped me learn on how to advocate for not only myself, for others that have a hard time advocating for themselves. So, I am happy that I'm advocating for not only myself, my housemates, as well, especially when they have a hard time, I step in. I advocate for them. Not only do I advocate for my housemates, I advocate for my program individuals as well when they have a hard time.

Kamisha: What is one of your favorite things about advocating?

Jackie: One of my favorite things about advocating is not only putting- not only for Central- not only do I want to put myself out there, I want people to learn from my perspective of what self-advocacy is, what self-advocacy is about, what they can learn from self-advocacy, so that more individuals can learn- more individuals can join our Central group.
