James’s Story

by James Williams

James' story is one of triumph! He is a determined advocate who gets things done.

James used to live at a developmental center. He wanted to have his own home. The institution staff said "don't move out". They said he needed the structure they provided. When he spoke out for others he was often told to "mind your own business". He was told to follow the program that was set out for him. James had bigger plans!

James was not happy there, and he wanted his own home. He contacted the Disability Law Center to help him exercise his rights in a lot of ways. Today, he is competent to make his own decisions and he is living in his own home with no structure. This is his greatest accomplishment! He also has a growing D.J. business (D.J James Entertainment: check him out!) and two other, part time jobs!

James is passionate about speaking out for others as well. He says he wants to help people with disabilities to become more independent and to enhance their lives.

When James was at the institution he noticed that his skilled coworkers were being paid subminimum wages. They were very good workers who he felt should be in the community. They had no options. Their pay stubs had no breakdown of hours. He brought his concerns to the Disability Law Center and a complaint was filed with the federal government. It was found that the institution had violated the worker's rights. They ordered DDS to pay over $10,000 in back wages!

James is active in civil rights in the Worcester area where he lives. He is on the REDD Group (Rights, Equality and Dignity for the Disabled). He serves as President/Chair of the Central Mass regional workteam. He also assists in training self-advocacy groups on what self-advocacy is all about.

James says, "We don't get our voices heard. We get pushed to the side. People need to realize we need our concerns addressed. We have a right to equal opportunities and to be treated like human beings...just like anyone else. Each of us is no less of a person."

If you have an issue that requires self-advocacy assistance James would be happy to speak to you at 774-289-5116. His email is jiggajames133@yahoo.com.

Congratulations and thank you James for your great work to make life better for all of us!
